The Omniscient - Chapter 1 Notes

Should probably be doing this in footnotes format as a part of the chapter...Not much detail, that's what Wikipedia's for and where I'm getting this info from...


The second day of the second month of the lunar calendar, the Longtaitou Festival:

  • Celebrates early spring and the coming of rain, praying for good harvests
  • The dragon (long) was associated with rain
  • Longtaitou means "dragon raising its head", signifies the dragon rising from a dormant state

The third day of the third lunar month, paying tribute to Xuanyuan:

  • Xuanyuan/Huangdi (Yellow Emperor), a mythical emperor and supposed ancestor of the Chinese
  • One name the Chinese call themselves is the "descendants of Yan and Huang"
  • Yan was another mythical emperor /ancestor
  • Ancestor veneration is/was very important in China
  • This day was the birthday of Xuanyuan
Twin pupils:
  • In Chinese folklore/mythology, people with strange features were thought to be special
  • Having twin pupils was seen as a sign of being a saint
  • A saint refers to someone of noble character and great knowledge, basically the perfect human. Also referred to Confucius
  • We now know that having twin pupils just means you have a problem with your eyes...
High School Entrance Examination (Zhongkao):
  • You've heard of China's gaokao, here's the middle school version
Village Chief:
  • More official than you think
  • Has a fancy title, Director of the Village Committee
  • Elected every three years by the village committee
  • Can be re-elected an indefinite number of times

Just wanted to address a review I saw. While there are elements of Chinese nationalism (duh), it's pretty good compared to other urban Chinese novels. Doesn't mean it's good, but for me it's tolerable. It just stands out because, a) it's China, and b) we're unused to it. Many works of fiction tend to highlight or emphasize their country of origin. This novel is no different. Like if the novel said USA is the center of the universe, you probably wouldn't bat an eye. But China... Of course, I can understand if anyone feel's uncomfortable about it.

The Omniscient - Chapter 4: Humanity's Greatest Merit in the Universe

Knowledge is a burden.           Even when his intelligence was being suppressed by the stars, Huang Ji never thought of it as much of a predicament. Strengthening his body allowed him to block out unknown information while acquiring knowledge could help him unlock and decipher that unknown information. This allowed him to understand the information and then also block it out. As long as there was a solution, he could go about solving the problem, it was merely a matter of hard work.           For Huang Ji, the real problem wasn't anything like having his intelligence suppressed by the stars. The true source of his worries originated from the most terrifying planetary object in the sky, the Moon. More accurately, a group of aliens living on the Moon! They were very few in number. Last week when he had checked there were only two, now there were four of them.  They were there to monitor Earth, this wasn't hard for Huan...
